What is Clubfoot?

The most deformity of the musculoskeletal system in newborns, occurring in about 1 in 1000 live births. It is recommended that treatment begin early, as early as the first few weeks of life. Diagnosis is typically made during pregnancy on ultrasound or immediately after delivery.

The goal of treatment is to have a normal looking foot with normal function. When treated appropriately, children are able to fully function and participate in any activities they want. The sequence of treatment includes:

  • Serial casting
  • Achilles tendon tenotomy
  • Foot abduction bracing
  • Weekly serial stretch casts
  • On average it takes 6-8 weeks/casts
  • Casting material is either Soft Roll or Plaster – ask your provider which option is best for you and your family

A small in-office procedure called an Achilles’ tendon tenotomy followed by foot abduction orthosis bracing.
